What do menopause and wine have in common? Mood Swing Wines, of course. Created by Mollie Macarthy-Openshaw in January of 2014, this start-up has gone from local wine-parties to being the exclusive wine at Harrah's Menopause the Musical in Las Vegas. We caught up with her to catch a glimpse of what started it all and why she chose Chico to grow her business.
EVERY COMPANY FOUNDER HAS THEIR AH-HA MOMENT. WHAT WAS YOURS?
While scouring the shelves at a local grocery store, I realized that wine took itself very seriously. Not one label would make my friend laugh in the midst of her tears and hot flashes.
Soon, I found myself waking up in the middle of the night with hot flashes and unable to sleep. Instead of counting sheep I visualized funny wine labels and branding for varietals that would put a smile on menopausal women’s flushed faces.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR "SPECIAL SAUCE"?
These wines are not overly serious at all; they're casual, fun, delicious, and easy to drink. I'm best known for being a positive voice for menopause, with a touch of humor in spite of it all. I give women something to laugh about, and who doesn't like wine?
LET'S TALK EMPLOYEES. WHAT WOULD THEY SAY ARE THE TOP THREE REASONS THEY LOVE WORKING FOR MOOD SWING WINES?
That I don't throw my hands up and give up when a door closes. Instead, I look at it as an even greater opportunity. I value everyone's opinions, creativity, what they can bring to the table, and they always know they have a voice. That I treat everyone the way I way I expect to be treated.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO START YOUR BUSINESS IN CHICO? WHAT GEOGRAPHIC REGION DO YOU SERVE?
That's easy, Chico is my hometown, and there's no better place to start a business. We currently serve across the United States.
PLEASE SHARE YOUR FIRST MEMORY OF CHICO.
Wow, I have so many! One that comes to mind is the first time my family and I tubed from the steel bridge to the covered bridge, and every summer after that for as long as I can remember.
SHARE A STORY THAT GIVES US A GLIMPSE INTO THE SOUL OF MOOD SWING WINES - WHY YOU EXIST.
With Mood Swing Wines I knew I was always wanted to give back. My heart was so heavy with several of my girlfriends that have gone through breast-cancer treatments and those sadly I've lost to breast cancer. I needed to do something, help, give back. My girlfriend Tracie Hannick and I decided to form our own non-profit. This year Project Hope of Butte County was born. You can learn more about Project Hope through the North Valley Community Foundation.
DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY CULTURE
It's a celebration!
Why not celebrate, laugh at, and even make fun of the challenges that menopause brings? Why not enjoy life together and drink wine together, enjoying the ride? My goal was to create a series of wines and wine-related products that highlight a woman in the midst of real life, struggling with a hot flash but taking it in stride.
WHAT MAKES YOU MOST PROUD?
That in addition to the bazillion friends I have, I cultivated new amazing relationships, traveled all over the country/world, and have watched my business grow in ways that I had only dreamed of. More importantly, I have received countless emails and messages on social media from ladies that are encouraged by my message about embracing life and taking it on the chin and not being too serious about menopause, all the while enjoying a glass of Memory Lapse Merlot, Zin-O-Pause and Covers Off Chardonnay.
MOST PROUD ABOUT LIVING IN CHICO?
For anyone that doesn't live in Chico doesn't understand it when we say that we are a close knit community, we are family. That makes me most proud.
When my son Hunter had a near fatal accident literally thousands and thousands of people came along side my family supporting us spiritually, emotionally and financially.
